Objectives
The objectives of this club shall be: to advance the best interest of the purebred dogs and dog fanciers in all matters; to emphasize the value of pure breeding; to create and further an appreciation on the part of all members and the public of the value of purebred and registered dogs; to encourage, support and conduct Dog Shows, Agility Trials and Obedience/Rally Trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club.
Code of Ethics
1. It shall be considered unethical for any member of the Roanoke Kennel Club to engage in the wholesaling of litters of puppies, or the selling of puppies or breeding stock to or through such places as pet shops, catalog houses, or other commercial sources of distribution. Neither shall a breeder engage in over-breeding his own bitches for profit disregarding the quality of the puppies.
2. It shall be considered unethical for any member of the Roanoke Kennel Club to knowingly violate any of the normally accepted ethical practices in breeding dogs, selling dogs, or holding dogs for public stud. No bitch or stud shall be considered for breeding who carries known hereditary defects or who is not in good health and physical condition at the time of breeding. Knowingly misrepresenting the health or quality of a puppy or adult dog for sale shall also be considered unethical. A stud owner will not knowingly breed bitches with hereditary defects, or in poor health or condition. Neither shall a member breed a bitch to any stud other than that agreed upon previously with the owner of the bitch.
3. Every member of the Roanoke Kennel Club shall familiarize himself/herself with the American Kennel Club rules regarding record keeping, registration, sale, and transfer of dogs, as well as the procedures regarding exhibiting dogs and the holding of dog shows. It shall be considered unethical to knowingly violate these rules and regulations.
4. Each member of the Club has an obligation to protect the best interest of the sport of dogs by conducting himself/herself in a manner designed to reflect credit on himself, his breed, and on the Roanoke Kennel Club. To that end, members of the Club with follow the AKC Code of Sportsmanship. This code is practiced in all sectors of our sport, including conformation, performance, and companion. Among the fundamentals of this code are the following:
a) Sportsmen welcome, encourage, and support newcomers to the sport.
b) Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.
c) Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club or themselves while taking part in the sport.
d) Sportsmen respect the history, traditions, and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.
e) Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.
f) The sportsman exhibitor respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs.
5. Any member suspended by the American Kennel Club will be suspended by the RKC for the same length of time as recommended by the AKC.
